Exhibition at Athinais Cultural Centre Nov. 30 – Dec. 19, 2010 of portraits in collage.

On show are 40 mysterious portraits in collage.  The technique used is photomontage: parts of photos from magazines and glossies have been cut with scissors and glued on paper to create a new image.

In her portraits the artist tries to turn faces x93inside-outx94. By visualizing thoughts, memories and feelings that dwell behind a face, a magical world is created where people have been transformed into characters from fairy-tales.

The artist created new personalities using both well-known and unknown faces, inspired by the great collage artists Hannah Hxf6ch and John Stezaker, and by the archetypes of the psychiatrist Carl Jung.

COLLAGE COURSES ATHENS

An easy road to artistic expression

I am giving Collage Courses in Athens, Greece from January 11th, 2011 till the end of May, on Tuesdays 10 a.m.- 12.30 p.m. and 6 p.m. – 8.30 p.m. and on Thursdays 10 a.m.- 12.30 p.m. The lessons take place in the Kifisia/Kefalari area. During the Course you will be introduced to the Art History of collage and create your own works of art. These Courses are in English.

I also teach the same Courses in Greek at the Theocharakis Foundation of Fine Arts and Music near Syntagma Square (www.thf.gr), and at the American College of Greece in Agia Paraskevi. These Courses start as from the 10th of March, 2011, 6-8.30 p.m. In these courses I explain a lot about the principles of art (composition, use of color, perspective) but the lessons are very relaxed, because the purpose is to enjoy making collage!

In the first half hour I will present the style and techniques of a well known collage artist (Picasso, Matisse, Arp, Hamilton etc.). In the next two hours I will assist you to apply these new insights to your own work, and to develop your individual artistic expression.

The group will consist of 4-6 students to stimulate the interactive artistic process, yet each student will get individual attention to help improve his/her artistic sensibility.

No previous experience in art necessary.

Please send an email to andanet@hol.gr for more information.

Workshops

I also organize workshops (morning, afternoon or weekend) on the Art History of the 20th century or on Collage for companies and schools. A relaxing, joyful way to spend some time with art and discover the magical world of collage. All workshops are designed in a playful, light way for people who wish to know more about art and collage.

Dxe9collage

Picture1 Dxe9collage in art, is the opposite of collage: instead of an image being built up of all or parts of existing images, it is created by cutting, tearing away or otherwise removing, pieces of an original image. A similar technique is the "lacerated poster", a poster in which one has been placed over another or others, and the top poster or posters have been ripped, revealing to a greater or lesser degree the poster or posters underneath.

The lacerated poster became an artform as early as 1949. It was an artistic intervention that sought to critique the newly emerged advertising technique of large-scale colour advertisements. In effect, the decollage destroys the advertisement, but leaves its remnants on view for the public to contemplate. The most celebrated artists of the dxe9collage technique, especially of the lacerated poster, are Jacques Villeglxe9, Mimmo Rotella and Raymond Hains. They were part of a larger group in the 1960s called Nouveau Rxe9alisme (New Realism), Paris’ answer to the American Pop movement. This was a mostly Paris-based group although Rotella was Italian and moved back to Italy shortly after the group was formed.

Nouveau Rxe9alistes made exensive use of collage and assemblage, using real objects incorporated directly into the work: they wanted to integrate the reality of everyday life into art and saw art as a "poetic recycling of urban, industrial and advertising reality". In its ideology New Realism is closer to Dada than Pop Art, as it was more critical of bourgeois capitalism.
